Hack A Green Future Hackathon: Charting the Path to a Greener, Smarter Tomorrow

The #HackAGreenFuture Hackathon concluded with great success at the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub in Konza Technopolis, uniting brilliant young innovators from Makueni, Machakos, and Kajiado counties for three intensive days of creativity, collaboration, and climate-focused problem-solving.

These emerging changemakers worked tirelessly to design real-world, tech-enabled solutions aimed at strengthening food security, enhancing waste management, protecting biodiversity, and building climate resilience across communities.

Organized in partnership with Timbuktoo Africa, UNDP Kenya, the Youth Enterprise Development Fund, and the three county governments, the hackathon empowered 40 participants through expert mentorship, guided innovation sessions, and hands-on prototyping, fueling a new wave of climate-smart entrepreneurship.

Konza Technopolis CEO John Paul Okwiri joined the innovators, reaffirming KoTDA’s commitment to:
•          Nurturing and supporting young innovators,
•          Accelerating climate-smart and digital innovation, and
•          Providing platforms where visionary ideas can grow into transformative, scalable solutions.

The hackathon was steered by a distinguished panel of judges:

1. Josephine Ndambuki, Chief Manager for Business Development and Innovation at Konza Technopolis;
2. Michael Kigathi, Digital Agriculture Specialist at the FAO; and
3. Astria Fataki, Timbuktoo Global Ecosystem Specialist at UNDP.

A special appreciation goes to Victor Apollo, Head of Solutions Mapping at UNDP Kenya and the lead organizer of the Hackathon, for orchestrating this impactful initiative.

After an inspiring final pitch session, three outstanding teams emerged as winners:
•   Overall Winner – Makueni County: Mkulima Link
•   Machakos County Winner: Recykroute
•   Kajiado County Winner: Osiligi

Selected from 11 innovative teams, the winners demonstrated exceptional creativity, teamwork, and a deep understanding of their communities’ climate challenges. These teams now advance to the next phase, where their solutions will be further developed and prepared for pilot deployment.,
