Nairobi is set for a major Japanese and global pop culture showcase this weekend as Otamatsuri 2026 brings a Japanese samurai and ninja performance troupe to the city for a full-day celebration of anime, manga, gaming and Japanese and Korean entertainment.

The annual convention, organised by Movie Jabber, will be held on Saturday, August 22, at The Carnivore Grounds and is expected to attract more than 5,000 fans.

The headline attraction will be KATANAYA ICHI, a visiting Japanese samurai and ninja performance troupe that will stage live performances showcasing the movement, spectacle and theatrical traditions associated with Japan’s warrior culture.

The event will run from 10am to 7pm, before transitioning into an overnight LAN gaming party that will continue into Sunday morning.

Beyond the headline performance, Otamatsuri will bring together cosplay, competitive gaming, K-pop, music, Japanese and Korean pop culture, food, technology, merchandise and fan activities.

Fans will be able to dress as their favourite anime and gaming characters, participate in cosplay activities, watch gaming competitions, attend panel discussions and explore vendors selling merchandise, food and technology products.

Jotham Micah, Managing Director of Movie Jabber, said the convention had grown beyond its origins as an event for anime enthusiasts into a broader celebration of global pop culture.

“Otamatsuri is about bringing the worlds that people have traditionally experienced through screens into a real-life shared experience,” said Micah.

He said the inclusion of a professional Japanese samurai and ninja troupe was intended to make this year’s event more immersive for Kenyan audiences.

“You can watch anime, play games or follow Japanese pop culture online, but there is something completely different about standing in front of a live Japanese performance and experiencing it with thousands of other fans,” he said.

The growing popularity of anime, gaming and K-pop is also creating new commercial opportunities around fandom, with organisers positioning Otamatsuri as a platform where entertainment, technology and commerce converge.

Micah said young Africans were increasingly using global entertainment cultures as a way of expressing themselves, building communities and discovering new cultures.

“Anime, gaming, K-pop and Japanese pop culture are no longer niche interests confined to small communities. They are becoming an important part of how young people express themselves, connect with one another and discover new cultures,” he said.

The convention’s commercial footprint has also expanded alongside its audience.

Organisers said vendors at previous editions recorded sales of more than Sh4.6 million in 2025, highlighting the growing purchasing power of Kenya’s fandom communities and the potential for businesses selling merchandise, food, technology and other products to tap into the market.

This year’s event will provide a physical marketplace for that growing ecosystem, with vendors expected to showcase anime merchandise, food and technology products to thousands of attendees.

The overnight LAN party will further extend the event’s gaming component, giving enthusiasts an opportunity to compete and interact beyond the main daytime programme.

Otamatsuri’s growth comes as anime, gaming and Asian popular culture gain greater visibility among young Kenyan consumers, driven by digital streaming, social media, online gaming and fan communities.

The organisers say the 2026 edition is designed to cater both to dedicated anime and gaming enthusiasts and to people experiencing Japanese and Korean pop culture for the first time.

With live samurai and ninja performances, cosplay, gaming, K-pop, music, food, technology and merchandise under one roof, Otamatsuri is increasingly positioning itself as a commercial and cultural platform reflecting the changing tastes of Kenya’s young entertainment audience.
