Google Enhances Android Security to Counter Rising Phone Theft

The new AI-powered features include the Theft Detection Lock

Google has unveiled new Android theft protection features to curb the rising cases of smartphone theft in Africa and worldwide.

Phone theft has become a major worry in many African nations, due to the accelerating adoption of smartphones in countries like Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi,

“This increased uptake has been accompanied by a rise in cellphone theft, as these devices become attractive targets for criminals due to their resale value and sensitive data within,” Google stated in a blog post.

The new AI-powered features include the Theft Detection Lock, which uses device sensors to identify theft attempts and locks the screen to block unauthorized access; the Offline Device Lock, which prevents data extraction while the phone is offline; and the Remote Lock, which enables quick device security without requiring Google account credentials.

Furthermore, the company has revealed that it will launch identity checks later this year, which will reinforce the biometric authentication security when accessing critical Google accounts and device settings.

“These theft protection features are just one example of how Android is working to provide real-world protection for everyone. We’re dedicated to working with our partners around the world to continuously improve Android security and help you and your data stay safe,” it stated.

These theft protection features are now available to users around the world through Android 15 and a Google Play Services update (Android 10+ devices).

Acknowledging the critical role mobile phones play in our day-to-day life by storing sensitive data, like payment information and personal details, Google is positive that the new security features will “make Android devices less appealing targets for thieves.”
