Thousands of Kenyans, including a significant number of teachers, have been unable to access their funds after a United States-based investment platform froze withdrawals starting September 4, 2026.

Investors were shown a notice citing the US PATRIOT Act and a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority rule, despite the platform not being associated with FINRA. Some were reportedly instructed to deposit additional funds before their accounts could be unlocked.

The scheme, marketed in Kenya through an organisation known as Global Investment Group, required a minimum deposit of about Sh65,000 and promised daily returns through copy-trading. Preliminary reports indicate it attracted more than 12,000 Kenyans.

On September 12, the Capital Markets Authority listed the platform among 15 entities operating in the country without approval, warning the public against dealing with them.
