More than 150 exhibitors from over 25 countries are showcasing construction materials and technologies in Nairobi as foreign suppliers seek opportunities in Kenya’s growing housing, infrastructure and urban development markets.

The ninth edition of Big 5 Construct Kenya opened on Wednesday at the Sarit Expo Centre, bringing together local businesses, international manufacturers and industry professionals to explore investment and supply opportunities.

The three-day exhibition runs until October 23 and features companies from countries including China, Egypt, Italy, Türkiye and Germany, which is participating for the first time.

Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) president Erick Rutto said the event could help attract foreign investment, strengthen local manufacturing and support affordable housing delivery.

“Big 5 Construct Kenya presents an opportunity to attract investment, strengthen local manufacturing and accelerate affordable housing delivery,” said Dr Rutto.

“With consistent policies and stronger international partnerships, Kenya can become a leading hub for innovative construction materials serving the wider African market.”

The exhibition comes as demand for building materials, equipment and other construction inputs grows alongside housing and infrastructure development projects.

Organisers say the event provides a platform for suppliers to showcase products, establish partnerships and connect with businesses seeking solutions across the construction supply chain.

First-time exhibitors include Kohler East Africa, Elite Tools, Henkel Kenya and Kerovit, whose products cover building systems, construction materials, tools and sanitaryware.

Other participating companies include Jafree Traders, RIB South Africa, Scaffolding Construction Company, Carldora, Neuce Paints, Emirates Aluminium Profile, Royal Industries and IKSUN/Southern Screws.

The event is also attracting international trade representatives, including officials from the Italian Trade Agency and the Egyptian Embassy, reflecting efforts to deepen commercial ties between Kenya and overseas markets.

“Kenya is one of East Africa’s most active construction markets. The sector is a key driver of the country’s economic growth and development, supported by a substantial pipeline of housing and urban development projects,” said Josine Heijmans, senior vice-president at event organiser dmg events.

She said the exhibition would allow industry players to explore new products, build partnerships and exchange knowledge to support the country’s development ambitions.

Focus shifts to sustainable construction

The exhibition has introduced a Big 5 Impact Trail to spotlight products designed to reduce the environmental footprint of buildings.

The initiative comes as Kenya pushes towards greener construction practices, with the Kenya National Buildings and Construction Decarbonization Roadmap covering the 2026–2040 period.

The showcase features products such as low-emission paints, energy-efficient insulated panels and heating, air conditioning and sanitary systems.

Participating brands include ProNature, Herz Middle East, Emirates Industrial Panels and National Paints Factories Co-Qatar, alongside Supreme, Surfaces Furnishing and Wood Products Kenya.

The products target growing demand for building solutions that improve energy efficiency and reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.

The sustainability focus also reflects the growing pressure on the construction industry to balance the demand for new housing and infrastructure with environmental considerations.

Industry training targets project risks

Beyond the exhibition floor, the event has brought together construction professionals for training and discussions on project delivery, regulation and commercial risks.

The CPD-certified Big 5 Talks opened with a panel examining how businesses can manage risks in Kenya’s changing construction environment.

The discussion featured representatives from the National Construction Authority (NCA), the Centre for Science and Technology Innovations, Bowmans law firm and Laxcon Group of Companies.

Speakers highlighted the need for stronger risk management, regulatory compliance and clear contractual obligations to reduce disputes and protect investments.

“Managing risk is not just about avoiding failure; it is about building trust, accountability and sustainable development,” said Dr Cecilia Wandiga, executive director of the Centre for Science and Technology Innovations.

The programme also addressed the commercial challenges facing businesses in the construction value chain, including how firms price professional services, develop scalable business models and build partnerships.

Susan Elisha, founder and creative director of FOMM Decor, said creative professionals needed stronger business structures and industry connections to expand their opportunities.

“Creative talent needs the right business to thrive,” she said.

Acting NCA chief executive Susan Rutto said improving the quality and safety of buildings and infrastructure would require greater collaboration, investment in skills and adoption of new construction practices.

“Achieving these ambitions requires collaboration across the value chain, investment in skills and knowledge, and the adoption of evolving construction practices,” she said.

The regulator said the exhibition provides an opportunity for industry players to discuss standards and emerging solutions while strengthening professional knowledge.

More than 25 certified sessions are scheduled across the three-day event, with contributions from Modular Africa Kenya, the Chartered Institute of Building, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Institution of Construction Project Managers of Kenya.

The programme includes a Federation Internationale des Ingenieurs-Conseils (FIDIC) masterclass on Thursday, followed by a leadership panel and training sessions organised by the Real Building Workers Association of Kenya on Friday.

The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 5pm until October 23. Entry is free for trade and industry professionals aged 21 and above.
