The lush greens of Ruiru Sports Club came alive as more than 250 engineers gathered for the inaugural Engineers Golf Day, a tournament blending sport, networking, and mentorship with a noble mission: raising funds to support engineering students.
Eng. Okova Derek, one of the tournament participants, said the idea evolved from a simple networking event into a platform to nurture young engineers.
“We realised student engineers face challenges in paying membership fees to IEK. That’s why we decided to create a kitty from this golf event to cover their costs. Students will now join IEK for free, thanks to the support of our sponsors,” he said.
Sponsors, including Kenya Pipeline, Galana Energies, Davis & Shatliff, and KERA, made the tournament possible, ensuring that IEK can run the initiative annually.
With thousands of students enrolling in engineering programs every year, the support aims to ensure a seamless transition from student membership into full professional ranks.
“This is a fraternity-building initiative,” Derek noted. “We want young engineers to learn from professors, doctors, and industry experts who are also golfers here today. They will be nurtured to carry on the tradition of excellence.”
Ruiru Sports Club captain, Justus Mathenge, praised the event’s impact. “We are proud to host engineers who are not only enjoying a round of golf but also investing in the future of Kenya’s engineering profession,” he said.
