Tecno Camon 20 Pro review: Is This the Ultimate Budget Smartphone?

After using the Tecno Camon 20 Pro for a few days, I’m pleasantly surprised by the impressive hardware and user experience it offers, especially considering its affordable price.

With this device Tecno is shaping up to be a worthy alternative for those pressed for money.

Launched recently, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro is budget-friendly smartphone that will likely wow you with features worthy of its price.

Packed with features typically found in higher-end devices, this phone is targeted towards photography enthusiasts on a budget.

In this review, we will delve into the key aspects of the Tecno Camon 20 Pro, including its design, display, performance, camera capabilities, and overall user experience.

Design and Display

For a budget-friendly smartphone, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro comes in an interesting package.

The phone’s rear has a leathery texture with a pleasantly tactile feel and an aesthetically pleasing styling. Meanwhile, the frame mimics the sheen of a sheen of an iPhone.

The Tecno Camon 20 Pro sports a sleek and modern design with a slim profile and a glossy finish.

Despite not featuring the recently unveiled magic skin its finish is still premium with prism like back holding the two cameras and flashlights.

Its 6.67-inch Full HD+ display offers vibrant colors and good viewing angles.

The phone features a hole-punch cut out on the top left corner of the display to house the front-facing camera.

Both the power and volume buttons are on the right hand side of the device

On the back it features two sizable, peepers for its cameras.

With its large cameras, it’s clear that the Camon 20 Pro prioritizes its cameras.

The smartphone includes a 64-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth camera.

On the other side, it has a front-facing 32-megapixel selfie camera.

On the lower side of the phone it features the type C charging port and mouthpiece and the jack pin port.

It quite interesting how Tecno included the jack pin port in the device at a time that competitors in the same range have done away with the feature.

While the bezels are relatively thin, the chin is slightly noticeable.

Overall, the design and display of the Camon 20 Pro are pleasing and well-suited for multimedia consumption and gaming.

Performance:

Under the hood, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro is powered by a MediaTek Helio G80 processor, paired with 8GB of RAM.

This hardware combination ensures smooth multitasking and decent performance for everyday tasks, such as browsing, social media, and casual gaming.

However, when it comes to resource-intensive games or heavy multitasking, the device might struggle a bit.

The inclusion of 256GB of internal storage is a significant advantage, providing ample space for apps, photos, and media files.

Additionally, the device runs on HiOS 7.6 based on Android 11, offering a clean and user-friendly interface.

Camera Capabilities:

The standout feature of the Tecno Camon 20 Pro is its camera setup and its sleek finish.

Tecno Camon 20 Pro 5G has been marketed as a camera-centric smartphone.

Equipped with a quad-camera system, it comprises a 64-megapixel primary sensor, an ultra-wide-angle lens, a depth sensor, and a dedicated AI lens.

The primary camera delivers impressive results in well-lit conditions, capturing detailed and sharp images with accurate colors.

In low-light scenarios, the phone employs Night mode to enhance image quality, resulting in brighter and more usable photos.

The ultra-wide-angle lens is handy for capturing wide landscape shots, but the image quality is slightly compromised compared to the primary sensor.

The depth sensor helps in producing appealing bokeh shots with good subject separation.

The 32-megapixel front-facing camera housed in the hole-punch cutout delivers excellent selfies with ample details and natural skin tones.

Here are a few Photos of the Device

Overall, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro’s camera capabilities are commendable, especially considering its price range.

While some may find the generated images appealing for social media, I preferred the Camon 20 Pro camera performance when the AI option was disabled.

With clear details on the smartphone screen, realistic hues, and well-preserved highlights, the photographs appeared more balanced.

Cameras tend to introduce some noise in low light, but the exposure to details remains acceptable.

The main 64MP sensor features a dedicated night mode, which, like any other smartphone, smoothens out the details at the tradeoff of eliminating graininess.

Battery Life and Connectivity:

The Tecno Camon 20 Pro packs a 5000mAh battery, even under the most strenuous conditions (heavy app use and occasional gaming), the phone lasted the full day on a single charge.

Under power draining Apps like the FIFA and Dream league I could still get more life out of its batteries.

Even when the battery is entirely depleted, the 33W fast charger can charge the phone in roughly 90 minutes from absolutely empty.

With moderate usage, the device easily lasts a full day, and even heavy users will find it difficult to drain the battery before the day ends.

The phone supports 18W fast charging, which is adequate but not exceptional.

In terms of connectivity, it features dual SIM support, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer.

Additional Features:

The Tecno Camon 20 Pro offers some additional features that enhance the user experience.

It includes a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, which is fast and accurate, providing convenient unlocking options.

The phone also supports face unlock, which is relatively quick and reliable in most lighting conditions.

It features a dedicated microSD card slot, allowing for storage expansion without sacrificing the dual SIM functionality.

Additionally, the device comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is becoming increasingly rare in modern smartphones.

Conclusion

The Tecno Camon 20 Pro impresses with its camera capabilities, offering a fantastic photography experience at an affordable price point.

Its design, display, and overall performance are also commendable for a budget smartphone.

While it may not match the processing power of higher-end devices, it performs well for everyday tasks.

The device’s battery life is impressive, ensuring that you won’t have to worry about running out of power during the day.

If you’re a photography enthusiast on a budget, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro is definitely worth considering.

Final Verdict

Who should buy the Tecno Camon 20 Pro 5G? The handset seems like a good investment for anyone looking for a high performing camera smartphone under Sh50,000.

What the phone lacks

A majority of the devices in the category come equipped with casting feature into the smarty TVs. In the Camon 20 pro I failed to locate it.
