Airtel Africa has announced a major partnership with SpaceX to deliver Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet to its customers across the African continent, aiming to bridge the digital divide and extend connectivity to underserved and remote regions.
Under the agreement, SpaceX has already secured operating licenses in 9 of the 14 countries where Airtel Africa operates, with licensing processes underway for the remaining five.
The collaboration is set to bolster Airtel’s satellite connectivity offerings, benefiting enterprises, public services, and socio-economic hubs such as schools and healthcare centers in rural areas.
The companies will also explore opportunities to expand rural coverage through cellular backhauling and leverage Airtel’s extensive ground infrastructure to strengthen Starlink’s regional capabilities.
Both parties expressed a shared commitment to promoting digital inclusion and advancing Africa’s digital economy through strategic cooperation.
“We remain deeply committed to our vision to enrich the lives of people of Africa,” said Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa. “This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step forward in our efforts to ensure that every individual, business, and community has access to reliable and affordable connectivity, even in the most remote parts of the continent.”
Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, echoed the sentiment.
“We are very excited to work with Airtel to bring the transformative benefits of Starlink to the African people. Airtel has been instrumental in shaping Africa’s telecom landscape, and this partnership allows us to complement our direct services by working alongside a leading industry player.”
Starlink, now active in more than 20 African markets, is positioning itself as a key player in expanding affordable broadband access throughout the continent. The partnership with Airtel marks a significant milestone in those efforts.
