APA Insurance Backs 2025 Cleantech Innovation Competition to Boost Youth-Led Climate Solutions

APA Insurance has partnered with the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) as a strategic supporter of the 3rd edition of the Cleantech Innovation Competition, a national initiative aimed at empowering young innovators tackling environmental challenges.

The competition, set to open for applications in July, targets students in universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across Kenya.

It seeks to identify and support early-stage, youth-led enterprises developing solutions in renewable energy, waste management, sustainable agriculture, water conservation, green transportation, eco-friendly construction, and nature-based innovations.

APA Insurance, a member of the Apollo Group, will support the program through mentorship, business training, and incubation services.

This backing aims to help student teams refine and scale their ideas into viable businesses that contribute to Kenya’s green transition.

“We are proud to support the Cleantech Innovation Competition 2025,” said Ashok Shah, Group CEO of APA Apollo Group. “These young innovators represent the next generation of climate leaders, and we believe their ideas can power a more sustainable and resilient future for Africa.”

The annual competition is a joint initiative by KCIC, the Embassy of Switzerland in Kenya, SICPA, and Strathmore University. Now in its third year, the program has grown into a key platform for nurturing climate-smart startups.

Joseph Murabula, CEO of KCIC, said the partnership with APA Insurance will significantly enhance the competition’s impact.

“We are cultivating a new generation of cleantech innovators. This partnership allows us to expand our reach and equip more young entrepreneurs with the tools they need to succeed in the green economy.”

One of the competition’s success stories is EcoBana, a startup founded by Lennox Omondi, which produces organic, affordable sanitary pads. The venture emerged from the first edition of the competition and has since gained recognition for tackling period poverty through sustainable innovation.

The program is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aims to address structural challenges that hinder the growth of cleantech enterprises, providing access to capital, expertise, and industry networks.
