APA Apollo Expands Into Tanzania With Insurance Acquisitions
APA Apollo Group has completed the acquisition of majority stakes in Tanzania’s Meticulous General Insurance Company and Metro Life Assurance Company, expanding its presence in East Africa’s insurance market.
The acquisition, which received the necessary regulatory and legal approvals, gives the Kenyan-headquartered insurance group controlling stakes in both companies, strengthening its regional operations in general insurance and life assurance.
The transaction is part of APA Apollo’s 2026–2030 strategy, which prioritises regional expansion, digital innovation and growth across East African markets.
Risper Ohaga, Group Chief Executive Officer of APA Apollo Group, said the entry into Tanzania would enable the group to combine its regional expertise with local market knowledge to develop insurance products targeting customers and businesses.
“Expanding into Tanzania marks a defining milestone in our regional strategy and strengthens our long-term commitment to building a leading financial services platform across East Africa,” said Ms Ohaga.
The group said the acquisition would allow the Tanzanian businesses to access its technology, partnerships and wider operational capabilities as they seek to expand their insurance offerings.
Protase Ishengoma, chairman of Meticulous General Insurance and Metro Life Assurance, said the partnership would help improve the range and accessibility of insurance products available to customers.
He said the two companies would retain their understanding of the Tanzanian market while drawing on APA Apollo’s regional experience and technical expertise.
The acquisition gives APA Apollo a stronger foothold in Tanzania as insurers seek to expand their reach across regional markets and develop products for businesses and individuals.
APA Apollo Group has operated in the insurance industry since 1977, with interests spanning general insurance, life assurance, microinsurance, pensions and asset management. Its shareholders and international partners include Swiss Re and Hollard International.
The group said the Tanzanian investment was intended to support sustainable growth and strengthen its financial services operations across East Africa.
Financial details of the transaction, including the value of the acquisition and the percentage stakes purchased in the two companies, were not disclosed in the announcement.
The expansion comes as part of a broader push by the group to build a diversified regional insurance business, with a focus on corporate governance, customer service and digital capabilities.
