Google Targets Kenya’s Gen-Z Creators, Students With Gemini AI Training

Google hosted a hands-on workshop event at its Nairobi office, locally dubbed Tutunge na Gemini that targeted Gen Z creators, media professionals and university students.

The session equipped participants with the knowledge they need to use Gemini in their day to day creative workflows; from research and brainstorming to writing, editing and content planning – while helping them discover new ways to approach digital storytelling.

Using practical demonstrations and interactive exercises, participants explored Gemini as an everyday creative partner, using its latest capabilities to develop ideas, refine content and collaborate with AI.

Spotlighted at the workshop were tools Gemini like Nano Banana 2 and Gemini Omni that enable users to to create unique visual assets, rapid prototyping, product photography and promotional assets. While Gemini Live allows users to explore ideas conversationally, Gems create a space for new ideas and iteration.

For students, access to AI tools can also play an important role in supporting learning and creativity. As part of the workshop, Google highlighted the Gemini Google AI Plus Student Offer, which provides eligible university students across Kenya with access to Gemini’s advanced AI capabilities to support their academic, creative and everyday needs. Google AI Plus offer includes Gemini Omni, two times higher usage limits in Gemini and 400 GB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, alongside a growing suite of AI-powered learning tools.

“AI is most useful when it helps people turn their ideas into meaningful work,” said Janet Kemboi Google Head of Communications Africa “Through Tutunge na Gemini, we are giving Kenya’s creators media professionals  and  university students  the opportunity to explore how Gemini can become part of their everyday creative and learning process – from developing an idea and conducting research to creating, refining and sharing a story. We want participants to leave with practical skills they can apply to their day to day workflows.”

 Charles Murito, Google Regional Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy, Middle East & Africa  underscored the company’s efforts of democratizing access to AI for African students.

 ¨This workshop demonstrates our commitment to upskill African youth with the digital tools they need to succeed beyond the continent. Our Google AI Plus student offer removes a major cost barrier to AI Tools for  African university students. We are bridging the institutional resource gap by enabling students at smaller public universities and technical colleges to gain access to the same research and synthesis tools used by global peers, mitigating campus-level library and computational deficits.¨

Beyond individual tasks, Gemini is designed to provide a more integrated experience by understanding the context of what users are working on and helping them collaborate across their everyday tools. Its capabilities include contextual awareness, agentic assistance, collaboration and personalisation, allowing users to work with AI in ways that are more relevant to their needs and workflows.

Geminiś agentic features support creatives in their busy day-to-day lives, scheduling appointments, and handling administrative tasks, allowing more time for the creative process.

The Tutunge na Gemini  workshop also provided a space for participants to connect,exchange ideas and explore how AI is shaping the way stories are created and consumed.

 The hands-on format reflects Google’s approach to AI education, giving people the opportunity to learn by doing and build familiarity with tools that can support their creative and professional work.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into how people learn, work and create, Google continues to develop experiences that help people understand and make practical use of these technologies.

Through initiatives such as Tutunge na Gemini, the company is bringing these capabilities closer to creators, media professionals and students, while encouraging responsible and thoughtful use of AI.
