From Nigeria to the UK: Dr. Sotonye Campbell’s Global Medical Journey

Dr. Sotonye Campbell’s path into medicine was shaped not by a single decision, but by lived experience and resilience. Born and raised in Nigeria, she battled malaria and pneumonia as a child and later underwent surgery for a small bowel obstruction, moments that inspired her to pursue a career in healthcare.

“I realised how much of an impact the surgeon had made on my life,” she recalls. “That was when I knew I wanted to help people through their most vulnerable moments.”

At 16, she moved to the United Kingdom to complete her A levels before earning a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Warwick. She later enrolled at St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine, drawn by its strong USMLE pass rates, diverse student body, and opportunities for clinical rotations in both the US and UK.

After graduating in 2019, Dr. Campbell earned a Master of Public Health to broaden her understanding of population health. She returned to Nigeria for her National Youth Service Corps year before successfully completing the UK’s PLAB exams and Situational Judgement Test in 2020, securing a place in the UK Foundation Programme.

Now a General Practice Specialty Trainee (GPST3) at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, she values the continuity of care and long-term patient relationships in general practice.

Dr. Campbell credits SGU’s clinical rotations in New York and institutional support during her GMC registration for easing her transition into the UK healthcare system.

Her advice to aspiring doctors: plan early, stay informed, and leverage global training opportunities.
