Nairobi played host to a Women in Tech and Innovation Media Breakfast that convened women leaders in technology, youth innovators and journalists to spotlight gender-sensitive reporting in STEM and innovation.
The event, organised by UN Women, DigiKen, and the Youth JP programmes, provided a platform to discuss the role of media in shaping narratives that encourage women and girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Dr. Caroline Mbaya, Program Lead for the Youth, Gender and Inclusive Development Program at ACTS, noted that inclusive storytelling is critical in dismantling barriers that keep women out of tech and innovation spaces.
Echoing the sentiment, Irene Mwoga, Regional Coordinator of the Digital Transformation Program at the UNEP Regional Office for Africa, emphasised that media coverage must highlight women’s contributions to digital transformation and ensure that their voices are not sidelined.
The breakfast underscored collaboration between media practitioners, development partners, and innovators as a key driver for achieving gender equity in STEM fields, with organisers calling for sustained engagement beyond the event.
