Sony’s WH-1000XM6 are the latest in the company’s line of flagship noise-cancelling headphones, taking over from the well-loved XM5s.
Launched in mid-2025 at about US$449 / £399 / €449, they sit firmly in the premium bracket of wireless ANC headsets.
Design & Comfort
At first glance, the XM6 look familiar, keeping the clean, minimalist style of their predecessor. But Sony has fixed one of the biggest gripes from the XM5 — the earcups now fold, making the headphones far easier to carry around. The case has also been redesigned with a magnetic clasp, a small but welcome touch.
The build is still mostly soft-touch plastic, but it feels sturdy thanks to reinforced metal hinges. At 254 grams, they’re not feather-light, yet they balance nicely on the head. Comfort is generally excellent, though some users may notice a tight clamp when new. The good news: it tends to loosen up over time.

This is where the XM6 really shine. Powered by Sony’s new QN3 chip and a network of 12 microphones, the ANC is sharper and more versatile than before. Sound Quality
Under the hood are 30mm carbon-fiber dome drivers tuned with the help of mastering engineers. The sound signature is classic Sony: warm and inviting, with solid but controlled bass, clear mids, and smooth highs.
The soundstage is wide enough for most genres, though not quite as expansive as some rivals. Through Sony’s companion app, you can tweak EQ settings, use presets, or dive into extras like 360 Reality Audio.

The XM6 support Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint pairing, so you can stay connected to two devices at once. They cover all the major codecs — SBC, AAC, LDAC — plus the newer LC3, which improves call quality. Speaking of calls, the multiple mics do a fine job in most situations, though voices can sound a little processed in very noisy settings.
Battery Life
Battery life is rated at 30 hours with ANC on, though real-world use can stretch to around 32. A quick three-minute charge gives you a few hours of playback — perfect for when you’re rushing out the door.
Where They Fall Short
There’s no water or sweat resistance, so they’re not built for workouts. The plastic finish, while light, lacks the luxury feel of some metal-clad competitors. And while improvements over the XM5 are real — better ANC, folding design — they’re incremental. If you already own the XM5, the upgrade may not feel urgent.
