Google Rolls Out Temporary Chat Feature and Updated Data Controls in Gemini AI Apps

Google is introducing new privacy and data management tools for its Gemini AI apps, including a Temporary Chat mode and expanded control over stored activity and uploads.

The Temporary Chat feature, launching over the coming days, allows users to start a conversation with Gemini that will not be used to personalise future interactions or train AI models.

These chats will not appear in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity, and will be automatically deleted after 72 hours, except for safety purposes.

In a broader privacy update, Google is renaming the Gemini Apps Activity setting to “Keep Activity”.

If enabled, this setting will save past chats, uploads, and certain files—such as documents, videos, screenshots, and photos—allowing users to resume conversations at any time. Starting September 2, some uploads may be used to help improve Google services unless Keep Activity is turned off.

Users can also delete activity history at any time.

A new option is also being introduced for Gemini audio and Gemini Live recordings, which include audio from the microphone button and video or screensharing sessions. This setting, off by default, allows users to opt in to share recordings to improve Google services.

Google says any activity used to enhance its services may be reviewed by human evaluators, but chats are disconnected from user accounts before review.

The company emphasises that these updates align with its privacy principles, prohibiting certain uses of generative AI under its Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy.
