Streaming platform Showmax will be discontinued in the near future following a strategic review by parent company MultiChoice, the company announced in a notice to subscribers on Thursday.
In a message dated March 5, MultiChoice said the decision was made after a “comprehensive review” of the platform’s operations, citing the need to strengthen its broader digital offering and ensure long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming market.
Despite the announcement, the company assured customers that the service will continue to operate normally for now.
“Importantly, at the moment there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time,” the notice said.
MultiChoice added that further details on the shutdown timeline and any transition plans for subscribers will be communicated well in advance.
The broadcaster said streaming remains a central part of its long-term strategy and pledged continued investment in premium content, technology and partnerships to improve digital entertainment offerings.
Launched as a video-on-demand service targeting African audiences, Showmax has been a key part of MultiChoice’s push into the streaming market as competition intensifies from global platforms.
The company said it will prioritize clear communication with subscribers as it prepares for the platform’s eventual closure.
